Why your body isn’t failing you in your 30s and 40s, it’s asking for a smarter approach
At 32, I stepped onto a bodybuilding stage wearing a tiny bikini.
The spotlight was so bright I couldn’t see the audience. I only remember my heart pounding and the judges’ voices echoing somewhere in the dark. I was a shy girl standing under bright lights, pretending to be confident.
A few months before that, I was scrolling Facebook when I saw a woman on stage in a bikini competition. She looked strong, glamorous, powerful. I messaged her and asked,
“How old are you?”
She said, “32.”
I was shocked. “You look stunning at 32.”
Something inside me said, I’m going to do this.
I had just started working as a personal trainer. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I wanted to challenge myself. I thought preparing for a competition would make me stronger, not just physically, but mentally.
I only had eight weeks to prepare.
I trained hard. I tried intermittent fasting for the first time. I remember one session training on an empty stomach and crying halfway through. I kept asking myself, “Why am I doing this?”
I weighed my food. I carried lunch boxes everywhere. My family didn’t understand. No one in my family was into fitness, so when they saw me weighing rice on a scale, they thought I was crazy.
But I was focused. I told myself this is what discipline looks like.
And yes, bikini prep taught me a lot. It built my confidence. It deepened my knowledge about training and nutrition. It made me mentally tougher.
That’s when I fell in love with strength training.
But here’s the confession.
When I stood on stage, hair done, makeup perfect, body at its leanest, I wasn’t happy.
I smiled. I posed. I looked “beautiful.” But inside, I still felt not good enough.
That was the moment I realized something important:
No matter how good you look on the outside, if you don’t feel enough inside, you will always be chasing something.
So I started working from the inside out.
Now I’m 40.
And my focus has completely shifted.
I don’t train just for how I look.I train for how I move. I train for how I feel. I train for the energy to coach all day and still have strength left for my own life.
If you’re in your 30s or 40s, you may have started noticing changes.
You used to eat anything and stay lean. Now the same meal shows up on your waist.
You used to function on 4–5 hours of sleep. Now, if you don’t sleep well, your whole day feels off.
You feel heavier. Slower. More tired.
And maybe you’ve told yourself:
“My metabolism is broken.”
“My hormones are messed up.”
“I’m just getting old.”
Let me tell you something as a coach, and as a 40-year-old woman:
Your body isn’t broken.
It’s adapting.
It’s asking for a different strategy.
In your 20s, you could get away with stress, under-eating, overtraining, and poor sleep.
In your 30s and 40s, your body wants:
• Resistance training to preserve muscle
• Enough protein to recover
• Structured workouts, not random sweat sessions
• Sleep
• Stress management
• Recovery
You don’t need more restriction. You need more intention.
You don’t need to eat less. You need to fuel properly.
You don’t need punishment. You need structure and consistency.
At 40, I no longer train to shrink myself.
I train to expand, my strength, my confidence, my impact.
I don’t chase the stage anymore.
I chase longevity. I chase energy. I chase feeling strong in my own skin.
So let me ask you:
What story are you telling yourself about your body right now?
Is it a story of decline?
Or is it a story of evolution?
Maybe your body isn’t betraying you.
Maybe it’s inviting you to level up.
And maybe… it’s time to rewrite the story.
