At Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, The Sediments of Human Civilization turns fabric into a powerful meditation on survival, nature, and the choices we make today

What if everything humanity has built was reduced to nothing more than a trace? PASAYA’s latest exhibition, The Sediments of Human Civilization (on The Brink of Its End), begins with that unsettling question and follows it through.
Held at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, the exhibition invites visitors to step into a speculative future, one where humanity is no longer at the center of the story. Instead, it imagines a world observed from afar, where advanced beings arrive on Earth and uncover what remains of our civilization, layer by layer.
The concept unfolds like an archaeological dig. Visitors move through three symbolic layers, from Culture, representing the peak of human achievement, to Nature, the force that sustains life, and finally to Elements, the most fundamental building blocks of existence. It is a quiet but striking reminder that everything we have built may one day be reduced to traces.

Textile, PASAYA’s medium of expertise, becomes the language of this narrative. Rather than functioning as decorative material, it acts as both canvas and statement, reflecting fragility, resilience, and the passage of time. The works draw on the philosophical reflections of Nithi Sthapitanonda, alongside contributions from Phansakdi Chakkaphak and Zeng Xiaolian, whose detailed interpretations of nature bring a sense of quiet reverence to the exhibition.
There is a sense of tension running throughout. Beauty is present, but it is never the end point. Instead, each piece carries an underlying question. What happens if we continue as we are?
The exhibition does not shy away from its message. It frames the current environmental crisis as a decisive moment, positioning humanity at a crossroads between survival and irreversible loss. Through both visual storytelling and accompanying discussions, it encourages visitors to consider the role of industry, innovation, and individual responsibility in shaping what comes next.
One of the highlights is a panel discussion that brings together PASAYA’s leadership to explore how design and technology might contribute to a more sustainable future. It is a continuation of the exhibition’s central idea, that art is not just a reflection of the world, but a tool for engaging with it.
What makes The Sediments of Human Civilization particularly compelling is its ability to balance scale with intimacy. The themes are vast, spanning millions of years and the fate of the planet, yet the experience feels personal. Visitors are not simply observing. They are being asked to decide. The exhibition ultimately leaves you with a lingering thought. If everything we know could one day become sediment, what matters is not what we have built, but what we choose to do now.
