A new opening in Chalong Bay invites travelers to experience a quieter, more local rhythm of island life

Phuket rarely needs an introduction, but where you stay on the island can completely shape the experience. While the west coast beaches continue to draw the biggest crowds, the arrival of Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Chalong Bay Resort signals a subtle shift—one that brings attention to Chalong Bay, a less-hyped corner in the south where daily life moves at a slower, more local pace.
Chalong has long been known more as a working bay than a resort destination. It’s where boats come and go, where divers set off early in the morning, and where seafood is still tied closely to what’s pulled from the water that day. Yet that’s exactly the appeal. From here, it’s easy to reach some of Phuket’s most recognizable landmarks—Wat Chalong, the island’s most important temple, and Phuket Old Town with its Sino-European buildings, cafés, and weekend markets. At the same time, Chalong Pier acts as a gateway to the Andaman, with regular access to islands like Phi Phi, Racha, Coral, and Similan, making it a practical base for those planning to spend more time offshore than on the beach.

The new Courtyard property leans into this idea of balance. It offers 280 rooms designed for comfort rather than excess, with clean layouts, private balconies, and a sense of calm that suits both short stays and longer visits. It’s not trying to compete with Phuket’s high-end beachfront resorts, but instead positions itself as an easy, well-connected base—somewhere you return to after a day out rather than the main attraction itself.
That same approach carries through to its dining and facilities. The all-day restaurant mixes European, Asian, and local flavors without overcomplicating things, while the café doubles as a casual co-working space, reflecting how many travelers now blend work and leisure. A swim-up pool bar, two outdoor pools, and a compact fitness center round out the offering, catering to both families and independent travelers who want options without feeling confined to a resort bubble.
What stands out most, though, is what sits beyond the property. From Chalong, you can still reach Patong, Kata, or Nai Harn when you want the classic Phuket beach experience, but you’re just as likely to spend your time exploring smaller neighborhoods, local markets, or setting out to sea. It’s a reminder that Phuket is not a single destination, but many different ones layered across the island.
For travelers who have already seen Phuket—or simply want a version that feels a little less curated—Chalong Bay offers a compelling alternative. And with new openings like this, it’s quietly becoming a place to watch.
