A Chao Phraya launch brings ambassadors and business leaders into the same conversation

While deals are often shaped over dinners and informal gatherings, a new platform is stepping in to make those connections more intentional. “Diplomacy Today,” recently soft-launched in Bangkok, aims to bring the diplomatic community and private sector into closer alignment, with a focus on turning dialogue into tangible economic outcomes.
The initiative follows a partnership between Dato’ Steve Cheah, chairman of the Diplomatic Council’s Global Committee on Innovation, Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Education, and Lifestyle and Travel Media Company Limited. While the collaboration is rooted in formal agreements, the direction is clear. This is diplomacy designed to work beyond ceremonial functions and into the realm of business, investment, and innovation.
At the heart of the platform is the idea of diplomacy meets business. It reflects a wider shift across Southeast Asia, where international relations are increasingly tied to economic growth and cross-border collaboration. Rather than existing in parallel, diplomacy and commerce are being positioned as part of the same ecosystem.
The soft launch, held on 28 February 2026 at Lounge by Flow Yacht Club at Terminal 21 Rama 3, brought together a notable mix of diplomatic figures and council leadership. Among those in attendance were H.E. Mrs. Julide Kayıhan, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Thailand; H.E. Ms. Szilvia Szalóki, Ambassador of Hungary to Thailand; H.E. Mr. Faiyaz Murshid Kazi, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Thailand; H.E. Dato' Jojie Samuel, Diplomatic Council Board of Presidents and former Ambassador of Malaysia to Thailand; H.E. Mr. Artur Dmochowski, Diplomatic Council Special Envoy to CLMTV and former Ambassador of Poland to Thailand; and Dato’ Steve Cheah, Head of Mission to Mekong countries and Global Chair of DCISE.

Following the formal announcement, the evening shifted into a more relaxed setting as guests boarded a yacht for a cruise along the Chao Phraya River, hosted by Flow Yacht Charter. The experience doubled as a networking session, offering a less structured environment for conversations to unfold. Against Bangkok’s skyline, the event highlighted the platform’s intention to create spaces where relationships can develop organically.
The Diplomatic Council’s Special Consultative Status with the United Nations adds weight to the initiative, aligning its direction with global sustainability goals and international standards. Still, the long-term impact will depend on how effectively the platform translates these connections into measurable outcomes.
Looking ahead, “Diplomacy Today” is set to roll out a series of initiatives aimed at sustaining momentum. These include the Ambassador’s Ball, designed as a high-level social gathering for diplomats and business leaders, and more focused engagement sessions that provide direct access to insights on trade, investment, innovation, and education.
If the early signals are anything to go by, the platform reflects a growing appetite in Bangkok for diplomacy that is more connected, more pragmatic, and more attuned to the realities of modern business.
