From a nine-seat root beer stand to 10,000 Marriott properties across the globe

As travelers increasingly seek experiences that connect luxury with nature, culture, and a sense of place, Marriott International has chosen a fitting destination to celebrate one of the most significant milestones in hospitality history.
The company has officially opened its 10,000th property worldwide: JW Marriott Ranthambore Resort & Spa, a luxury retreat located near India's famed Ranthambore National Park. The opening comes as Marriott approaches its 100th anniversary, highlighting a remarkable journey that began in 1927 as a modest nine-seat root beer stand in Washington, D.C.
Today, Marriott's portfolio spans 10,000 properties across 146 countries and territories, making it one of the world's largest hospitality companies.
"Marriott was founded 99 years ago as a nine-seat root beer stand, and as of today, has grown into a global portfolio of 10,000 properties," said Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International. "I'm immensely proud of this tremendous milestone."
Why Ranthambore Matters
Rather than marking the occasion in a major city, Marriott chose a destination that reflects one of travel's strongest emerging trends: immersive luxury rooted in nature.
Located just minutes from Ranthambore National Park, one of India's most celebrated wildlife reserves and a renowned habitat for Bengal tigers, the JW Marriott Ranthambore Resort & Spa offers guests an opportunity to experience India's wilderness without sacrificing comfort.
The resort features 127 accommodations, including guest rooms, suites, and private villas designed to blend contemporary luxury with the surrounding landscape. Dining experiences range from modern Indian cuisine to regional specialties and botanical cocktails inspired by local ingredients.
The setting reflects a growing appetite among travelers for meaningful escapes that combine wildlife, wellness, and cultural discovery, an evolution that continues to reshape the luxury hospitality sector worldwide.
A Growing Appetite for Experiential Luxury
The opening also underscores the continued expansion of the JW Marriott brand, which now encompasses more than 130 properties globally.
Known for its emphasis on mindfulness, wellness, and elevated service, JW Marriott has become one of the cornerstones of Marriott's luxury portfolio, which now includes nearly 700 properties across seven luxury brands in 74 countries and territories.
The milestone arrives at a time when luxury travelers are increasingly prioritizing experiences over possessions. Nature-based retreats, wellness-focused getaways, and destinations that offer authentic local connections have emerged as some of the fastest-growing segments within the premium travel market.
Ranthambore—where safari adventures meet refined hospitality—captures many of these evolving preferences in a single destination.
A Global Growth Story
The opening of JW Marriott Ranthambore Resort & Spa is only one of several notable additions to Marriott's global network this year.
In Europe, The St. Regis Budapest introduced the brand's signature luxury experience to Hungary for the first time, occupying the historic Klotild Palace in the heart of the city.
In Mexico, The Westin Playa Vallarta became Westin's first all-inclusive resort in the country, reflecting the growing demand for premium all-inclusive travel experiences.
Meanwhile, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy made its debut in Greater China with the opening of Artik Suzhou, while StudioRes by Marriott opened its first modular-construction extended-stay property near Greensboro Airport in the United States.
Together, these openings illustrate the breadth of today's hospitality landscape—from urban heritage hotels and extended-stay apartments to all-inclusive beach resorts and luxury wildlife retreats.
Looking Ahead to Marriott's Next Century
As Marriott prepares to celebrate its centennial next year, the opening of its 10,000th property serves as more than a numerical achievement. It reflects how travel itself has evolved over the past century and where it may be headed next.
For today's travelers, luxury is increasingly defined not only by comfort and service, but also by connection: to nature, culture, wellness, and meaningful experiences. The JW Marriott Ranthambore Resort & Spa embodies that shift, making it a symbolic choice for Marriott's latest milestone and a glimpse into the future of global hospitality.
