Instagram reveals how the platform is shaping the next chapter of digital life in Thailand

If you have received a funny meme, a travel recommendation, a restaurant Reel, or a random cat video from a friend lately, chances are it was sent through Instagram.
According to new insights shared during Instagram Close Friends Night in Bangkok, private sharing is becoming one of the most powerful forces shaping how people connect online. The platform's latest data offers a fascinating glimpse into how Thai users are changing the way they communicate, discover brands, and build communities in 2026.
Hosted as an intimate gathering for creators, celebrities, tastemakers, and industry leaders, Instagram Close Friends Night highlighted the evolving role of Instagram in Thailand—not simply as a social media platform, but as a cultural ecosystem where conversations, commerce, and creativity intersect.
Instagram's Reach in Thailand Is Bigger Than You Think
Instagram has long been associated with younger audiences, but the latest figures suggest its influence now stretches across multiple generations.
The platform reaches approximately 80 percent of Gen Z users in Thailand while also engaging more than half of Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. That broad appeal has helped Instagram become one of the country's most influential digital destinations for lifestyle discovery, entertainment, and shopping.

The growth is also being fueled by Reels. Globally, more than half of the time spent on Instagram is dedicated to watching short-form video content, and Reels has emerged as Thailand's fastest-growing short-video platform since 2023.
For brands, the implications are significant. One in two Thai users actively use Instagram to search for products and follow brands, while 70 percent rely on Instagram Direct Messages to help inform purchasing decisions.
The Rise of "Digital Pebbling"
One of the evening's most interesting insights centered on a trend Meta calls "digital pebbling."
Inspired by the behavior of penguins, which offer pebbles to potential mates as a sign of affection, digital pebbling describes the act of sending content to people you care about. On Instagram, that content is increasingly Reels. In fact, 85 percent of content shared through Instagram Direct Messages consists of Reels.
In Thailand, this has taken on a uniquely local dimension.
Rather than sending a text message saying "kid tueng" ("I miss you"), many users are expressing affection by sharing a Reel instead. It might be a recipe, a travel destination, a beauty tip, or simply a video that reminds them of someone. The gesture is small, personal, and increasingly common among younger users.
As social media becomes more private, meaningful connections are moving away from public feeds and into close-knit circles.

Expertise Is the New Influence
Another trend reshaping Instagram in Thailand is what Meta describes as the "Credibility Economy."
For years, follower counts and celebrity status dominated social media culture. Today, users are increasingly seeking expertise over popularity. According to Meta's research, 81 percent of people consider expert knowledge the most important quality in a creator, ranking it above humor, relatability, and fame.
This shift is particularly visible in Thailand's growing "sai" culture—communities built around shared passions and specialist knowledge.
Whether it's beauty, food, personal finance, travel, wellness, or fitness, audiences are gravitating toward creators who can teach, explain, and provide genuine value. Expertise has become a form of influence in its own right.
For brands and marketers, this signals a move toward deeper engagement and more authentic storytelling rather than broad, mass-market visibility.
Thai Culture Is Finding Global Audiences
Perhaps the most exciting trend is how Thai cultural exports are expanding beyond national borders.
Instagram highlighted the growing international popularity of Thai soft power categories including Boy Love (BL) series, T-Pop, Thai beauty, and Thai cuisine. What were once niche communities have evolved into global fandoms with passionate audiences across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Technology is helping accelerate that growth. New features such as AI-powered Reel translations with lip-sync capabilities allow creators to reach international audiences while maintaining the authenticity of their original voice and content.
The result is a digital landscape where Thai creators no longer need to choose between staying local and going global.

The Future of Instagram in Thailand
The insights from Instagram Close Friends Night reveal a platform that is becoming increasingly intimate, interest-driven, and culturally influential.
The future of Instagram in Thailand appears less focused on broadcasting to the masses and more focused on building meaningful communities. Private sharing, trusted expertise, and globally relevant local culture are emerging as the key drivers of growth.
And if current trends continue, the most powerful social media interaction in Thailand may not be a public post at all; it may simply be a Reel sent to someone in your Close Friends circle.
