Where sport, society, and sunset glamour converge on Thailand’s coast

There is something quietly cinematic about watching polo played on the beach. Horses charging across wet sand, the sea stretching endlessly beyond, and a crowd that feels as invested in the atmosphere as in the game itself. In Hua Hin, this scene has become an annual ritual.

On Saturday, 4 April 2026, the shoreline in front of InterContinental Hua Hin Resort once again set the stage for the Princess Pa’s Cup Beach Polo Hua Hin, now in its 15th year. What began as a niche sporting event has steadily evolved into one of Thailand’s most distinctive lifestyle gatherings, where polo is only part of the story.

Beach polo, by nature, plays by different rules. The game is dictated as much by the tide as by the players, with matches scheduled when the sand is firm enough to carry the weight and speed of the horses. It adds a layer of unpredictability, and perhaps a touch of romance, to a sport traditionally associated with manicured fields and strict precision.

But in Hua Hin, the appeal extends far beyond the match itself. The event draws a cross-section of guests that reflects its hybrid identity, part sporting spectacle, part social occasion. Business figures, equestrian enthusiasts, and a well-dressed crowd of Bangkok regulars and international visitors gather along the beachfront, moving easily between watching the game and taking in everything around it.

This year’s teams arrived from Thailand, Belgium, England, and the United States, reinforcing the event’s international pull. Yet it is the moments between the matches that define the day. A fashion show unfolds on horseback. Players and horses parade along the shoreline. Guests linger over drinks, shifting between shaded lounges and open sand, as the line between spectator and participant blurs.

Behind the scenes, long-time organizers including B.Grimm and Proud Group have shaped the event into something that feels both polished and effortless. Hua Hin itself plays a central role. With its equestrian heritage and stretch of coastline, the town offers a setting that few destinations can replicate.

As afternoon light begins to fade, the energy changes. What starts as a relaxed day by the sea transitions into a more composed evening affair. This year’s Celestial Blue & Pearl Summer Elegance Dinner carried the mood forward with understated styling, ocean-inspired tones, and a garden party that felt in tune with its surroundings rather than staged against them.

The shift from day to night is where the event reveals its deeper layer. A charity auction becomes the focal point of the evening, with proceeds supporting the Kamlangjai Project, which focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities for inmates across Thailand. It is a reminder that beneath the elegance and spectacle, the event has always been anchored in purpose.

The closing notes come from the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, whose open-air performance brings a sense of stillness after the day’s movement. Music carries across the beachfront, blending with the sound of the waves, and for a moment, the setting feels suspended between worlds, part sporting arena, part cultural stage.

Fifteen years in, beach polo in Hua Hin has become more than an event. It is a reflection of how Thailand continues to reinterpret global traditions through its own lens, softer, more fluid, and deeply tied to place. Here, polo is not confined to the field. It lives on the sand, shaped by the tide, and defined as much by the people who gather as by the game itself.
